The best engineering and entrepreneurship is done when one understands their target population on a multidimensional level. By empathetically designing from an engineering perspective, one is better equipped to market a product successfully. Thus, the following opportunities are oriented toward exposing me to a wide range of different demographic populations. Gaining the experience of communicating with a diverse range of people will make me a more effective physician and entrepreneur.
- Sociology 264 Service Learning Course: 20 hours of volunteering in Treyburn rehabilitation center. Learned to empathize with the elderly and meet their companionship needs.
- Psychology 240 Service Learning Course: 20 hours of volunteering with StudentU: An organization dedicated to providing academic assistance to underserved populations in Durham. Learned to communicate complex academic ideas in simple ways to aid student learning. (300+ hours to date)
- FEMMES+ After-school Director: As a program director of FEMMES+ (an organization dedicated to promoting STEM interest amongst underserved populations, especially females), I practice leadership and organization skills in all the logistical work of recruiting volunteers and designing fun programming for students.
- Benefits Enrollment Center: During COVID, I called low-income citizens to check on their physical and mental health and ensured that they had access to basic needs such as food and toiletries. Additionally, I delivered food boxes to those in need and was able to meet a diverse population of community members. (104 hours).
